Green Initiatives

At The Penn Stater, we’re committed to practices that benefit the environment—from purchasing local, organic foods to using eco-friendly packaging to repurposing solid wood furniture.

The Penn Stater was honored with a Waste Watcher Award for exemplary performance in recycling, waste reduction, reuse, and composting, as well as the GREENS Award at the Annual Global Renewable Energy Expo Networking Summit.  The Penn Stater was also honored as one of the Centre County Green Business Partners for their commitment to sustainability and sustainable practices.

Here are a just few examples of Penn State Hospitality Services leadership in sustainability:

  • Composting food waste
  • Purchasing and using local and organic foods
  • Using energy-saving light bulbs
  • Recycling newspapers and other items from guest rooms
  • Repurposing old furniture – old wooden tables have been retooled as shelving units and tiered display units for banquet tables, and bed headboards from renovated rooms have been made into recycling containers in The Penn Stater
  • Using bulk food for breaks instead of individually wrapped packages
  • Using corn-based biodegradable cups, flatware, and to-go shells, as well as wooden stir sticks
  • Using office paper that is 30 percent recycled content and bleach free
  • Offering optional towel re-use program for guest rooms
